505 Leland Avenue is a remodel and addition to an existing 1930s bungalow located in the Travis Heights area of Austin. The addition approximately doubled the size of the house and a separate cottage was built at the back of the lot with a carport. This house is for a speculative inhabitant. The focus of the design was to keep the integrity of the original house intact and refinish the existing interior materials, and to have an addition that continued in the same style. The addition included a new master bedroom and bath, a large living room, and a loft. The kitchen, laundry, pantry, and dining room were all remodeled in the existing house. Careful attention in the plan was made to be sure the energy continued to flow through the house and was not direct in its path to the rear of the house. The existing house has a wonderful quality of light, which was also a priority in the design of the addition. This was achieved through clerestory windows in the living room and dormer windows in the loft. Detail trim work and finish-out of materials contributed positively to the design. This allows the end user to find a very comforting and timeless house to reside in. The cottage also copied the same style through the design of the windows, trim, and siding materials.
