7 Ways to Use Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year in Your Home

Our Austin Architects Share the Latest Color Trends and How to Use Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year in Your Home

Every year, our team of Austin architects eagerly awaits Pantone's Color of the Year announcement. In 2021, Pantone surprised us with two colors, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow, which inspired us to create bright and joyful designs. Last year, we fell in love with Pantone’s Very Peri, a brand-new shade of periwinkle blue that quickly became our favorite Pantone color yet. As you might be able to tell from our logo, we love all things purple. The Pantone Color of the Year significantly impacts the direction of residential design and architecture each year. So, we couldn’t be more excited to share this year’s hue with you. We’ve thought up 7 ways to use Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year in your home so you can join in on the latest color trends.

What is the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year?

Say Hello to Viva Magenta

Join us in welcoming Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta 18-1750. With the announcement of this rich, vibrant hue, Pantone invites us all to “enter the Magentaverse” this year. This warm shade of red pulls from nature, referencing bright blooming florals, inspiring sunsets, and changing fall foliage. Pantone explains the strong, vibrating color evokes emotion, sparking joy, optimism, and celebration. In addition, the color symbolizes our collective strength and determination to write a new narrative as we adapt to a changing world.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explains that Viva Magenta is intended to ground us in a world of digital distractions.

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

Viva Magenta harks back to nature while welcoming the rebellious spirit and encouraging self-expression, especially in the home. In the 2020s, our architects have noticed trends moving away from standard finishes to homeowners’ desire for custom features and colors that better reflect their lifestyles. Additionally, we’ve seen a desire from clients to create separate spaces to disconnect from the chaos of daily life and reconnect with family and friends, whether that means designing a separate home office or creating a welcoming patio. Viva Magenta is an empowering color option made for the new wave of home personalization.

Create a Home Color Palette with Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year

Are you ready to enter Pantone’s Magentaverse? We have two ideas for incorporating Viva Magenta into your home’s color palette for both interior and exterior colors.

Accent a Neutral Palette

Pantone recommends pairing this vibrant hue with light, earthy neutrals like their Gray Sand, Gray Lilac, and Pale Khaki colors. Using Viva Magenta as an accent to a neutral palette allows you to add a dash of personality to your home without overpowering your space.

Embrace a Jewel-tone Palette

If you’re ready to fully embrace color, go bold with a rich jewel-tone palette. Jewel-tone colors include shimmering and saturated shades of red, yellow, green, blue, purple, and, of course, magenta. While bold, a jewel color palette can work with various architectural styles, including Craftsman and Cottage.

7 Ways to Use Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year Throughout Your Home

Whether you want to add Viva Magenta to one room or your entire home, our Austin architects have 7 ways to use Pantone’s 2023 Color of the Year.

1. Install a Viva Magenta Front Door

Viva Magenta inspires celebration. So, vibrantly welcome your guests into your home with a magenta front door. A bold front door creates a front focal point and signals where guests should go. Remember to choose exterior paint colors for your home carefully. Test the shade on the door first and confirm it matches the rest of your property's exterior color palette.

2. Create Viva Magenta Accent Walls

Bring the celebration inside with Viva Magenta accent walls. Of course, you can select magenta paint colors for your interior walls, but why not get more creative? Spoonflower has partnered with Pantone to create lines of Viva Magenta wallpaper and textiles this year, which can add color, texture, and pattern to your walls.

3. Incorporate Viva Magenta Furnishings and Decor

Start small if you are hesitant to paint an entire room or your home exterior in Vivia Magenta. Incorporate Viva Magenta furnishings and decor into your space with accent chairs, pillows, or art. Unlike architectural changes, small decor pieces are easier to update as trends change.

4. Make a Gourmet Statement with Viva Magenta Appliances

If you’ve fallen in love with Viva Magenta, make a gourmet statement in the kitchen with a magenta appliance package. Our Austin architects recommend ordering custom-colored appliances from Big Chill. Magenta is already making its way into kitchens with colorful cookware lines, like Selena Gomez’s Our Place pot collection

The Selena Gomez x Our Place Always Pan

5. Liven Up a Wet Bar with Viva Magenta Cabinets

Viga Magenta is a color made for joyful festivities. We love the idea of adding custom magenta cabinets to a wet bar to create a lively feel akin to your favorite speakeasy. Bring this bold color into your home’s entertaining areas to brighten the festivities and spark a night of fun.

6. Gather Around a Viva Magenta Fireplace

If you want to bring the 2023 Color of the Year into the living room, consider installing Viva Magenta accent tile around your fireplace surround and hearth. The vibrant red hue will beautifully complement and reflect your roaring fire.

7. Bring Viva Magenta Tile into the Bathroom

Start your morning with the empowering shade of Viva Magenta that sets the stage for the rest of the day. Bring magenta accent tile into your bathroom. Our Austin architects recommend taking magenta tiles up your vanity wall to create a stunning feature or adding magenta tile accents to your shower niche for added interest.
