Craft Revival: The Latest 2022 Residential Design Trend

Our Austin Architects Define the Craft Revival Architectural Style and Why It’s Trending for 2022

The 2010s saw the revitalization of mid-century modern, the continued rise of stark contemporary, and the introduction of the modern farmhouse craze. Now, it’s time to break up with the modern farmhouse and make way for the latest 2022 residential design trend—Craft Revival. (If you like Craftsman architecture, you are going to love the Craft Revival trend!) Our Austin architects explain the recent rise of the Craft Revival style, highlight the features that make up the look, and discuss the trends that birthed the movement. Here’s how to achieve the latest home design trend for 2022.

What is Craft Revival Architecture?

Inspired by the Arts and Crafts, Craftsman, and cottage-style movements, Craft Revival architecture pairs handcrafted finishes, traditional floor plans, and uniquely charming features to form cozy one-of-a-kind properties. Cookie-cutter home designs of the 2010s, like barebones modern and modern farmhouse, gave way to the personalization revolution. As a result, 2022 home design trends now place more emphasis on quality, charm, and warmth. Craft Revival architecture includes details like exposed beams, custom built-ins, and handcrafted tile, drawing design inspiration from 1920s Craftsman and cottage bungalows.

Traditional Floor Plans and Design

2022 home design trends haven’t brought a complete end to open-concept living. Homeowners are still looking for open-concept kitchens and living rooms. However, our Austin architecture firm receives many more requests for old-school spaces like mudrooms, butler's pantries, sculleries, libraries, and dressing rooms. Craft Revival architecture brings back these traditional features while keeping an open feel. Additional rooms like a butler's pantry don’t only bring charm. They also bring function, practicality, and storage for modern living.

Custom Built-ins and Finishes

Craft Revival architecture is all about custom built-ins and finishes, much like the Craftsman style from which it draws inspiration. So expect to see a rise in popularity of custom built-ins made to display collections, handcrafted millwork and trim, hand-painted tile, and more.

Reclaimed Materials

The Craft Revival style also focuses on sustainable materials and repurposing elements into something new. According to the 2022 Interior Designer Trends Survey, roughly 97 percent of designers report that sustainable materials are trending. Using reclaimed materials in residential design not only helps the planet but also adds character, interest, and story to a design. For example, our Palo Pinto Ranch project used timber sourced from the site to make columns and wood accents in the home. Reviving materials and giving them a second life is what Craft Revival is all about!

Indoor-outdoor Connections

Indoor-outdoor connections improve relaxation, lower stress, make us feel connected to the outside world, and expand usable space. After being confined to the indoors for much of the 2020s so far, it is no surprise that homeowners are looking for more outdoor space. The Craft Revival style takes inspiration from the classic Craftsman front porch, incorporating screened porches and three-season rooms into the design plans.

Earthty Color Palettes

From farmhouse to contemporary, color palettes of the 2010s embraced cold and high-contrast blacks, whites, and grays. However, the trending Craft Revival look goes back one century to revive the Craftsman color palette of warm brown woods, rusts, olives, and mustard yellows. These colors tie back into nature and bring a calming, grounded feel to any home.

Divided Light Windows

In the 2010s, our Austin architecture clients regularly asked us for large, non-divided window panes that felt clean and modern. Fast forward to 2022, and we are seeing the majority of clients now asking for light-divided windows in a variety of traditional styles. Divided light windows simply refer to windows with dividers or grids that break up the glass panels into multiple smaller components. These divides add an extra layer of detail and are commonly seen in Craftsman and cottage architecture.

Hipped Rooflines and Dormer Windows

Craftsman and cottage-style homes rely on traditional hipped rooflines and dormer windows for character, charm, and added living space on upper floors. If building or renovating in the Craft Revival style, consider converting attic space into a home office or rec room by adding dormer windows. The result will be a charming room with unique angles that offers increased function and square footage.

Why is the Craft Revival Style Trending for 2022?

Embracing Personal Tastes Over Trends

One of the biggest reasons the Craft Revival style is trending for 2022 is a renewed embrace of personal design taste over trends. As a result, individuality, character, and unique charm prevail, meaning handcrafted artisan goods beat out big-box store materials.

Creating a Welcoming and Cozy Home

Many of the residential design styles of the 2010s felt cold, depersonalized, and stark. After spending so much time in our homes at the start of the 2020s, homeowners realized they actually needed a calming, peaceful retreat where they could nest and recharge. The Craft Revival style combines warm woods and cozy finishes from Craftsman and cottage architecture that achieves a sense of welcome and home.

Valuing Craftsmanship Over Convenience

While it may be easier to buy a generic white subway tile off the shelf for your kitchen backsplash, a custom hand-painted tile will bring a smile to your face every time you prepare dinner. In the digital age of instant gratification, homeowners are taking a step back to realize the benefits of craftsmanship over convenience. Sometimes, the best things are worth waiting for.
